Art plays an integral role in developing the aesthetic awareness of all pupils.

"The devil whispered behind the leaves, 'It's pretty, but is it Art?'"
 Rudyard Kipling 1865 -1936

The department aims to increase pupil's awareness of the world around them, challenging and enhancing their comprehension, whilst developing their skills and exploring materials. Pupils are encouraged to question and are allowed the freedom to create and experiment within a safe environment.

Key Stage 3

At KS3 pupils cover a variety of topics that support the school cross curricular themes. Topics include:

  • Identity and Cultural Diversity
  • Healthy Lifestyles and Community
  • Global Dimensions and New Media Technologies

Key Stage 4

At KS4, option pupils work towards the AQA Art & Design (Fine Art) specification. This enables creative freedom and diversity, with students exploring a variety of media on a number of scales. 60% coursework and 40% externally set task make up the assessment criteria, including a 10 hour controlled piece.

Additional support is available to all Art pupils during lunchtimes and afterschool sessions; this fosters an environment of peer support across the 11-16 age range.

Focused workshops are also available during the term giving pupils the experience of working first-hand with a practicing artist, developing new skills and techniques that transcend into the curriculum.

Critical studies forms an essential part of pupils' Art comprehension and therefore GCSE classes take part in an annual gallery visit. This activity enhances and supports coursework.
