Pupils from St Christopher’s Church of England High School embarked on the adventure of a lifetime as they jetted off to New York City over the May half-term holiday, from 22nd to 26th May. The trip, packed with iconic sights, cultural experiences, and classic American food, offered the pupils a memorable blend of education and fun.
The excitement began on Wednesday, May 22nd, as pupils, dressed in their special school hoodies, were waved off by proud families at the school gates before making their way to Manchester Airport. Upon arriving in the Big Apple and settling into their hotel, the group wasted no time diving into the city’s famous atmosphere. Their first evening included a visit to the glittering Rockefeller Center and the historic St Patrick’s Cathedral—an awe-inspiring welcome to the city that never sleeps!
Day two began with grey skies and rain, but spirits remained high. The city that never sleeps was accompanied by the Year 9s that never sleep (at least for this first night) and a contingent visited the Dakota Building to see John Lennon’s former home and his memorial in Central Park (all before 7AM). After a cozy breakfast indoors, the group explored The High Line, an elevated urban park offering unique views of the city, followed by a wander through the charming streets of Greenwich Village, hunting for celebrities and engaging with key cultural heritage such as the Stonewall Inn, Dylan Thomas’ White Horse Tavern, The Cherry Lane Theatre and the epitome of cultural capital; the Friends apartment building. Later, the pupils experienced the hustle and bustle of Macy’s, one of the world’s largest department stores. Dinner was served with a side of show tunes at Ellen’s Stardust Diner, followed by an electrifying walk through Times Square. Emergency ponchos proved a trip-saver for some, shielding them from the unpredictable New York weather.
Saturday's itinerary was packed with landmarks and local flavour. Starting at the majestic Grand Central Terminal, the group then took the subway to the colourful streets of Little Italy and Chinatown. After crossing the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge, they enjoyed a slice of authentic New York pizza at Grimaldi’s. The afternoon brought some peaceful moments in Central Park before dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. A thriller of an evening ended on a high note with a performance of MJ the Musical, which left everyone buzzing.
Sunday, their last full day, offered a reflective and awe-inspiring experience. The Staten Island Ferry provided up-close views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a symbol of freedom and hope. After lunch, the group visited the National September 11 Memorial & Museum—an emotional and educational highlight. Dinner at Bill’s Bar & Burger fuelled the group for a second visit to the Rockefeller Center, this time for a breathtaking night-time view of the city from the Top of the Rock.
On Monday, it was time to say goodbye. With a final hearty American breakfast and some last-minute shopping on 5th Avenue, the pupils made their way to the airport, full of stories, souvenirs, and cherished memories.
Though tired, both pupils and staff returned to the UK with their hearts full and their minds enriched, having shared an unforgettable experience that will no doubt remain a highlight of their time at St Christopher’s CE High School.
