Year 10 Geography students from St Christopher’s CE High School recently returned from an enriching and sun-soaked trip to Spain, packed with exploration, learning, and unforgettable memories.
Day One: Arrival in Tossa de Mar
The trip began early on Friday morning, but excitement and enthusiasm quickly overpowered any tiredness. Upon arrival in the beautiful coastal town of Tossa de Mar, pupils enjoyed a beach visit where Mr Gerrard delivered an engaging lesson on shingle beaches and destructive waves—proving that learning doesn't stop at the classroom door. After some time relaxing around the pool, the group headed into town for a delicious evening meal, followed by ice cream in the picturesque main square. The day ended with a walk along the medieval walls of Vila Vella, offering breathtaking views across the bay.
Day Two: Exploring Barcelona
Saturday brought blazing sunshine and a full itinerary. After a quick morning dip in the sea, pupils travelled into the heart of Barcelona. The first stop was the awe-inspiring La Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudí’s still-unfinished architectural masterpiece. The students then strolled along the famous Las Ramblas, with time to browse the bustling Boqueria markets and shops around Plaça de Catalunya. Dinner was enjoyed at TimeOut Market in Port Vell, a haven of world-class street food. The evening concluded with a visit to Park Güell, where students admired Gaudí’s iconic mosaics and whimsical architecture. A karaoke session on the coach ride back and a final ice cream in Tossa de Mar brought the exciting day to a close.
Day Three: Volcanic Landscapes and Farewell Festivities
Sunday's highlight was a trip to the Garrotxa Volcanic Natural Park, where students were treated to a guided tour of monogenetic volcanoes—those that erupt only once—as well as the unique low-altitude beech forests and volcanic lava bubbles. Back in Tossa de Mar, there was time for a final swim before students spent their last evening exploring the town. The night ended on a high note, with a lively conga line in the square accompanied by live guitar music. It was a perfect farewell to the town that had become their home for the weekend.
Day Four: Barcelona Aquarium and Homeward Bound
Monday began with more “Coach Karaoke” as the group made their final stop at the Barcelona Aquarium, where pupils observed Mediterranean marine life—and even some penguins! After a final lunch in Port Vell, the group headed to the airport for their journey home. In a touching gesture, pupils presented the staff with thoughtful thank-you gifts, leaving more than a few teachers emotional. As Mr Gerrard joked, his trip PowerPoint hasn't been updated since 2019—but this trip has definitely earned a starring role.
Reflecting on the trip, staff praised the students’ exemplary behaviour, enthusiasm, and sense of adventure. “They have been a credit to themselves, their families, and the school,” one teacher said. “We feel incredibly privileged to have shared these memories with them.”
Farewell, Barcelona – until next time!
