Sixth Form Students experience the classics at Ancient Greek Drama Festival at Warwick University
In January students in the Sixth Form who study Classical Civilisation were given the exciting opportunity to attend the Ancient Greek Drama Festival at the University of Warwick. This links to a major unit in their studies.
Students participated in several lectures and seminars, giving them a taste of studying at undergraduate level. They then watched a performance of Aeschylus' Agamemnon. Students were also able to get a feel for a university campus and an idea of student life.
The department and students are incredibly grateful to the Classical Association for their kind funding of transport for the trip, making it possible.
Some comments form students:
“It was a very interesting experience to see what university life was like in Warwick. Learning about classical civilisation in the lectures and seminar were quite informative. Watching Agamemnon was very exciting and, in my opinion, the highlight of the day.”
- Amber M, Lower Sixth
“I enjoyed the seminar the most as it gave me an idea on how we would be taught classic civilisations at university. I enjoyed the performance of the play as it gave me an idea of what it would have been like to watch the play in Ancient Greece.”
- Imogen N, Lower Sixth
“The seminars and lectures provided useful insight into the context of the play 'Agamemnon', the importance of language and how the themes found in Greek tragedy still speak to us today, thousands of years after they were first performed.”
- Seb B, Year 13.
“One of the highlights of the trip was the interactive lecture/workshop which was both educational but also allowed us to experience university teaching. Dealing with the materials in a hands-on fashion helped in deepening our knowledge and understanding and brought the subject to life. the production of 'Agamemnon' by the university students at the end of the day really tied everything together and helped to make the experience memorable.”
-Tayah H, Upper Sixth
“I had an amazing day exploring the campus of Warick University and was surprised with all the amenities on site. We spent the day attending lectures, seminars and watching the Agamemnon play. From the props to the actors, the performance was such an innovative and mesmerising experience, a lot of time and effort went into putting the play together. This trip has given me a deeper exploration of Classical civilisation and has inspired me to further pursue the subject.”
- Courtney, Upper Sixth
