Icebergs vs. Skyscrapers
27/11/2023

The difference between skyscrapers and icebergs is that one grows up, and the other grows down. Fascinatingly, the split between the percentage above and below the surface for each is exactly the same – in reverse! 20% of a skyscraper is below the surface, with 80% above ground. 20% of an iceberg is visible above the water, with 80% beneath.

At St. Christopher’s youth church, we are discovering that human lives can be like this too. Oh, how we all want to be skyscrapers: tall, proud, looking down on those around us, seen by, and visible to all! Tragically, the 9/11 terror attack on the twin towers of the World trade centre showed us how fragile skyscrapers can be, when two passenger aircraft caused each of those world-famous iconic skyscrapers to fold like packs of cards!

We are deliberately creating space for our young people to grow inwards and downwards and are thoroughly enjoying watching how secure in themselves they are becoming. We have come to understand that our inner health is priceless and requires the most focus and attention. We never encourage our young people to grow upwards quickly at the expense of putting down deep roots and growing inwardly. Trees with deep roots are far stronger than tall buildings.

“They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you (Jesus) are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.”Matthew 22:16
