Year 10 Geography pupils recently returned from a memorable four-day field trip to Barcelona and the surrounding Catalonia region, combining first-hand geographical investigation with opportunities to experience Spain's rich culture, history and architecture.
Following an early start, the group travelled to the coastal town of Tossa de Mar, where they settled into their accommodation before exploring the local area. Pupils enjoyed time on the beach and in the town, experiencing the relaxed atmosphere of the Costa Brava and sampling local cuisine, accompanied by traditional live guitar music in the town square.
The second day saw pupils travel into the heart of Barcelona to explore many of the city's most famous landmarks. The visit included Antoni Gaudí's iconic La Sagrada Família, where students learned about the history and ongoing construction of one of the world's most recognisable buildings. The group also visited Plaça de Catalunya, walked along the famous Las Ramblas, explored the bustling St Joseph (La Boqueria) Market and spent time at Port Vell, providing valuable opportunities to observe examples of urban regeneration studied as part of the GCSE Geography course. The day concluded with a visit to Gaudí's colourful Park Güell, where pupils admired the architect's distinctive use of mosaics, columns and organic design.
A particular highlight of the trip was the third day's visit to Garrotxa Volcanic Natural Park, where pupils deepened their understanding of physical geography through a guided tour of the area's unique volcanic landscape. Students learned about monogenetic volcanoes, explored one of Europe's rare low-altitude beech forests and investigated volcanic landforms, including the formation of lava bubbles. The fieldwork provided an excellent opportunity to see geographical processes in action beyond the classroom.
After returning to Tossa de Mar, pupils enjoyed one final evening together, experiencing the unique atmosphere of watching Spain compete in the FIFA Women's World Cup Final whilst in Spain itself—a memorable cultural experience that added another special dimension to the visit.
On the final day, the group visited Poble Espanyol, the open-air architectural museum on Montjuïc Hill, where pupils explored recreations of more than 100 buildings representing different regions of Spain. The visit provided further insight into the country's diverse architectural styles, artistic traditions and cultural heritage.
Before departing for the airport, pupils surprised the accompanying staff with thoughtful gifts to thank them for their support throughout the trip. It was a kind gesture that reflected the maturity, appreciation and character shown by the group.
Throughout the visit, our Year 10 pupils were outstanding ambassadors for St Christopher's. Their enthusiasm for learning, exemplary behaviour and willingness to embrace every opportunity made the trip a tremendous success. The experiences gained will undoubtedly enhance their GCSE Geography studies while providing lasting memories of an unforgettable visit to Spain.
