After a seven-year hiatus, St Christopher's CE High School and Sixth Form was delighted to see the return of its much-loved Music Tour, as 39 pupils, students and staff embarked on an unforgettable journey to northern Italy.
Following a 30-hour coach journey through England, France, Switzerland and into Italy, pupils and students arrived in the beautiful surroundings of Lake Garda, where they were warmly welcomed before preparing for an exciting week of rehearsals, concerts and cultural visits.
The tour brought together members of the Senior Vocals choir, Cantores, and the Jazz Band under the direction of Miss Davies, accompanied by Mrs Ismail. Despite the long journey and soaring temperatures that regularly exceeded 40°C, the students displayed outstanding commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the week.
Before each performance, pupils and students rehearsed daily to refine their programmes, making the most of every opportunity to prepare. Their dedication quickly paid dividends as they performed three highly successful concerts in stunning locations around Lake Garda and Venice.
The first concert took place in the picturesque lakeside town of Torbole. Performing on the steps outside the church overlooking Lake Garda, the choirs initially faced an empty audience area. However, as the music began, visitors and local residents were drawn into the square until every seat was filled and spectators lined the surrounding streets. The audience responded enthusiastically to every performance, with the choirs receiving prolonged applause and standing room only by the end of the evening. The Jazz Band rounded off the concert with an energetic programme that had the audience clapping, cheering and dancing in the square.
The following evening, the tour travelled to the magnificent Villa Ducale near Venice for another memorable performance. Against the stunning backdrop of the historic villa, both choirs delivered confident, expressive performances that captivated the audience. The Jazz Band once again impressed with an exciting programme of swing and jazz classics, receiving calls for more from the appreciative Italian audience. Staff commented on the remarkable confidence the pupils and students had developed after their first performance, with every ensemble performing to an exceptionally high standard.
The final concert, held in Garda's beautiful Piazza Municipale overlooking the lake, provided a fitting finale to the tour. Despite performing in temperatures approaching 42°C, the pupils and students demonstrated tremendous resilience and musical excellence. Crowds gathered throughout the performance until the piazza was full, with many more watching from nearby cafés and restaurants. The choirs sang with remarkable poise despite the intense heat, while the Jazz Band delighted audiences with a lively programme that earned multiple encore requests. It was a wonderful conclusion to a week of outstanding music-making.
Alongside the performances, the tour enjoyed exploring some of northern Italy's most famous destinations. A visit to Verona included time to discover the city's historic streets, Juliet's Balcony and the impressive Roman amphitheatre, while a day in Venice allowed them all to travel by water taxi, visit St Mark's Square, admire the Rialto Bridge and experience the unique atmosphere of one of Europe's most iconic cities.
The itinerary also included valuable opportunities to relax and enjoy time together. Pupils and students spent time by the hotel swimming pool after rehearsals, while a visit to Rio Valli Water Park provided welcome respite from the exceptional summer temperatures before the final concert.
Throughout the tour, pupils and students represented St Christopher's with distinction. Staff repeatedly praised their excellent behaviour, teamwork, resilience and willingness to support one another. Whether helping transport musical equipment, stepping in to solve last-minute wardrobe mishaps before performances or simply encouraging one another throughout rehearsals and concerts, the group embodied the school's values and demonstrated the strength of its musical community.
The success of the tour was made possible through the dedication and hard work of the staff team, particularly Miss Davies, whose meticulous planning and musical direction ensured every concert was a memorable occasion. Thanks also go to Mrs Ismail for her outstanding accompaniment and support throughout the week, together with all the staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the tour ran smoothly.
For many, this was their first international music tour and an experience they will remember for years to come. The friendships strengthened, the confidence gained through performance, and the memories created in some of Italy's most beautiful settings made the tour an overwhelming success.
After seven years away, the return of the St Christopher's Music Tour could not have been more fitting. We are immensely proud of every pupil and student who took part and look forward to many more musical adventures in the years ahead.
