Pupils Experience the Trip of a Lifetime in New York City
08/06/2026

A group of 62 Year 9 and Year 10 pupils, accompanied by a small number of Sixth Form students and eight members of staff, recently returned from an unforgettable five-day educational visit to New York City. The exciting trip provided pupils with the opportunity to explore some of the world's most famous landmarks, immerse themselves in American culture, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

A Flying Start in the Big Apple

After departing a rainy Manchester, the group arrived in the sunshine of New York City, ready to begin their adventure. Despite a long day of travel, spirits remained high as students took in some of Manhattan's most iconic sights, including St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Plaza and the bright lights of Times Square.

The first day concluded after what felt like a 22-hour adventure, giving everyone a well-earned rest before a packed itinerary ahead.

Discovering New York's Culture and History

Day two began with a traditional American breakfast of waffles, pancakes, eggs and bacon, providing plenty of energy for a day of exploration.

Pupils enjoyed a walk along the High Line, taking in views of the Hudson River and experiencing New York's vibrant artistic culture. A treasure hunt around Greenwich Village led the group to a number of famous landmarks, including the Friends apartment building, the iconic Nighthawks scene, Cherry Lane Theatre and Dylan Thomas' White Horse Tavern.

The group also learned more about the history of the Stonewall Riots during an impromptu lesson that brought an important chapter of civil rights history to life.

Following a successful shopping trip to Macy's, pupils visited Central Park and the Dakota Building before enjoying dinner at the world-famous Ellen's Stardust Diner. The evening's entertainment proved so inspiring that several pupils, along with a member of staff, jokingly claimed to have been "talent spotted" for Broadway.

“New York was a trip of a lifetime, and to do it with all our friends at school made it even better. All the places we visited, down to MJ the Musical and all the tourists’ attractions were amazing. The group of teachers who came with us made everything so much more special. Memories that will never be forgotten.”

Connie Hartley, Year 9

Rain Couldn't Stop the Adventure

Armed with ponchos and plenty of enthusiasm, the group embraced a rainy third day in the city.

The morning began at Grand Central Terminal, where pupils admired the stunning architecture and tested out the famous Whispering Gallery. They then crossed the iconic Brooklyn Bridge before sampling some authentic New York pizza and cannoli.

Later, the group returned to Times Square before enjoying dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly a spectacular performance of MJ the Musical on Broadway, providing a memorable insight into New York's world-famous theatre scene.

Reflection and Remembrance

Day four offered a mixture of sightseeing, learning and reflection.

After breakfast, the group travelled south and boarded the Staten Island Ferry, enjoying fantastic views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline from the water.

Pupils then explored Wall Street and New York's Financial District before gathering at the memorial fountains at the World Trade Centre. A visit to the 9/11 Museum provided a powerful and thought-provoking experience, encouraging reflection on the events of September 11 and their lasting impact.

The day concluded with a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe before some well-earned shopping and refreshments. Due to low cloud cover, plans to visit Top of the Rock were postponed, allowing pupils the opportunity to enjoy even more of New York's famous shops and cafés.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

Throughout the visit, pupils demonstrated excellent behaviour, enthusiasm and curiosity, making the most of every opportunity presented to them. From world-famous landmarks and cultural experiences to historical learning and Broadway performances, the trip provided countless opportunities for personal growth and unforgettable memories.

The school would like to thank all staff involved in organising and supporting the visit, as well as the pupils and students whose positive attitude made the trip such a success.

“The New York Trip was unbelievable, not only was it planned to make the most out of our time there, but the pupils and staff involved made it all that more special. From wandering the streets of Greenwich, seeing the amazing MJ the musical to taking time to reflect at the 9/11 memorial, pupils showed respect, excitement and resilience. I am extremely proud to have been part of a trip, with brilliant pupils, even those who discovered huge chickens dressed as the Statue of Liberty, their quacks/squeak can still be heard in Manhattan!”
