Year 9 Subject Choices

Dear Parent,

Year 9 Subject Choices

It has been a delight to meet with Year 9 today as they attend school following such a lengthy and disruptive period of Lockdown. The year group returns in the middle of the Options process with the information booklet and forms already released and plans in place for a series of guidance assemblies and a virtual parents’ evening scheduled for Thursday.

The Options Booklet lists those subjects which lead to the English Baccalaureate (EBacc):

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • A language (French, German or Spanish)
  • History or Geography

In many schools the EBacc is compulsory and whilst we don’t insist on this combination of subjects we do strongly encourage you to make this positive selection.

Opting for the EBacc will place your son or daughter in the strongest position to compete with young people from all over the country. This combination of subjects is the one likely to open more doors and to be valued most by universities and employers. The study of these subjects will enrich pupils’ studies and give them a broad general knowledge that will enable them to participate in and contribute to society.

The EBacc is suitable for all pupils. Those who would like to pursue a vocational career post-16 can still do so and those looking to follow the academic route offered by A-levels will be ideally placed to engage and succeed in the next stage of their education.

I do hope that you see the merits of the EBacc and choose subjects accordingly.

You can find more information and downloadable versions of the booklet and form here.

Yours sincerely,

R D Jones
