Teach the Teacher
28/09/2021

Students across the UK demand compulsory Sustainability education. Young activists launch Teach the Teacher, a global campaign to tackle inadequate climate education.

Accrington St Christopher's are ahead of the game, as our students have been asking the same question for several years. In response to their commitment to sustainability within school, a new seven week course has been introduced to all pupils from years 7, 8 and 9. The course was designed to combine the knowledge of local and world issues, including the energy crisis, within an innovative, positive setting. Students will consider various aspects of sustainability and apply their own ideas to upcycle items into new products, through a business-like approach.

With extra-curricular support from The Prospects Foundation, we believe we will alleviate any anxiety the media is portraying over climate change and concentrate on educating the next generations of innovators, scientists and people who will make a difference, rather than simply talk about it. Actions speak louder than words and the 14 year old Eco Group is testament to that, having taken their message to European Parliament in person, in November 2017, meeting BREXIT negotiators as well as supporting the local homeless in Accrington. This will continue with a homeless sleep out at school on Thursday 4th November. You can find out more by following us on Twitter @Eco_Group

Honey Bradshaw, year 12 and Alison Ashworth, year 13, School Eco Captains presented their thoughts to staff on Tuesday 28th September.

Wendy Litherland, the schools Director of Sustainability was part of OCR's initial National History GCSE launch in June 2020, added…

"As teachers it is our duty to explain the issues facing the Earth, especially the energy crisis and its impact on their futures. Caring for the environment and others should be natural and we lead by example. Close partnerships with local primary schools, environmental charities, and employers ensure our pupils not only receive an excellent academic education, but the extra-curricular activities enhance mind, body, and the planet as we prepare them for their next steps into education or employment."
