Student's BASE Competition Success!
15/06/2021

Four St Christopher’s Sixth Form A-level Business and Economics students have reached the final of a national business and accounting competition for 16 to 17-year-olds.

We are delighted and very proud to announce that four of our Sixth Form students have achieved a place at the ICAEW BASE National Final. The winning team, who came out top of their North West heat, from St Christopher’s Sixth Form is made up of Joseph Downham, Harry Thompson, Travis Cash and Abbie Jopson. All four are now in Year 13 and have just completed their A-level exams. Abbie (pictured with Mr Coop-Rushworth) said:

“Getting into the BASE final is an exciting opportunity to show and have our skills as business and economics students recognised. Wanting to go into finance myself, this achievement would be a good talking point at interviews as it would set me aside from others.”

BASE is ICAEW’s free national business and accounting competition for 16 to17-year-olds across the UK. It is an exciting experience in which students participate in team challenges, giving them an understanding of what it is like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant whilst developing their key employability skills. The BASE competition was created to provide school and college students with a taste of what it is really like to work as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant Since its launch in 2009, more than 25,000 students have tested their business skills and competed for the prestigious title of BASE National Champions.

This year the competition has taken place virtually and received a large number of entrants, even more so after the cancellation of last year’s competition (in 2019 5,000 students took part in 48 heats, with a maximum of four students per team). The standard of entries has been very high and reaching the final is a considerable achievement. Head of Business and Economics, Mr Coop-Rushworth commented:

"I am very proud of our students for showing excellent skills in teamwork and academia. They have grown so much over the last two years and this achievement is a testament to their dedication. Our students work hard to be the best they can be - and this proves it! They are ready for the finals and look forward to the challenge ahead.”

The final will take place virtually on Wednesday 6th June, when one lucky team from the 24, will be crowned National Champions and win an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil each, £4000 for the Sixth Form, a trip to London to meet the ICAEW CEO, Michael Izza, and a full-day employability session (runners-up will each win an iPad and a half-day employability session).

Mr Cuff, Deputy Headteacher and Head of the Sixth Form, said that he was delighted by their achievement in such strange times:

"This is a superb achievement for our students and, after such a difficult year, the final is something they can look forward to as their time with us draws to a close. Abbie, Travis, Joseph and Harry should be rightly proud of their success so far, and I am sure they will, as always, give their very best.”

We would like to wish them all the very best for the final!
