Mathematics is essential in every walk of life: whether you are wallpapering, applying for a mortgage or deciding whether the pair of jeans that are in the sale are actually the bargain of the year or not!

The department aims to develop confidence, interest and enjoyment in mathematics. We use a variety of up-to-date teaching methods and resources to engage pupils and relate their mathematical knowledge to everyday life around them. The school subscribes to the mathematics website MyMaths which allows pupils to access topic-based worksheets and interactive lessons at home as well as school. These can be used to reinforce their understanding and is an excellent revision tool. They each have a personal login and can track their progress throughout the year.

Key Stage 3


At Key Stage 3, pupils will follow the new Mathematics programmes of study from September 2014.  The aims of this curriculum are to ensure that all pupils:
  • become fluent in the fundamental of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and preserving in seeking solutions.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, pupils follow the AQA GCSE scheme of work (from current Year 10), which is assessed at the end of Year 11. Pupils will follow the Foundation or Higher scheme of work. To allow pupils the best overall result, they will be able, if necessary, to choose between the Higher and Foundation tiers. Support is provided for GCSE pupils through focused morning groups, Booster nights and thorough monitoring.

Level 2 Further Mathematics

Pupils in our top set GCSE class will be given the opportunity to study for an extra qualification in after-school tuition sessions. This course provides an excellent preparation for A-Level study of Mathematics. It is designed for those students who will to achieve grades A and A* in GCSE Mathematics. The content covers the areas of algebra and geometry, and also gives an introduction to calculus and matrices and develops further skills in trigonometry, functions and graphs.


Within the Mathematics department, we are keen to promote enjoyment and excitement in Mathematics. Individual and Team challenges are coordinated by the UKMT and Further Maths Support Programme and extend and enrich Gifted and Talented pupils.

The UKMT Individual Maths Challenges are lively, intriguing multiple-choice question papers, which are designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils. The three levels cover the secondary school range 11-18 and together they attract over 600,000 entries from over 4000 schools and colleges.

The UKMT Team Challenges promote mathematical dexterity, team working, and communication skills. They also give pupils the opportunity to compete against pupils from other schools in their region. The team challenges are currently available for Years 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13 pupils.

Year 7 pupils are given the opportunity to attend the Maths weekend at Whitehough Outdoor Centre. Activities during the weekend include orienteering, archery, indoor climbing and caving, mountain biking, a low-ropes and high ropes course, archery and maths puzzles.
